Bailey Mountain Welsh Terriers is located on
Bailey Mountain in Mars Hill, N.C. and it is from this
mountain that we get our name. Our house and small
farm cover approximately 10 acres with a small creek, Banjo
Branch, running through the middle. |

The town of Mars Hill is also the home of
Mars Hill College. The College is located in one of the
most beautiful and healthful regions of the Eastern United
States, the mountains of Western North Carolina.
On Feb. 16, 1859, the school was chartered by
the North Carolina General Assembly as Mars Hill College, a
name suggested by trustee Lewis Palmer (1791-1874).
Palmer suggested the name based on scripture from the
Bible's Acts 17:22: "Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars
Hill . . .". The charter gave the college power to
confer "all such degrees and marks of literary distinction
as are usually
conferred
in colleges or seminaries of learning."
The town, which derives its name from the
college, has a population of about 2,200. It is 18
miles north of Asheville via highway 19-23. Asheville is the
largest city in the western third of the state with a
population of approximately 65,000. Asheville has the
sophisticated attractions of a major metropolis and is known
for its quality arts, crafts, and music offerings. Its
annual Bele Chere festival each summer draws about 300,000
people. The campus is also 10 miles east of Marshall,
the county seat of Madison County. |
